Autumn forest on a Door County Land Trust preserve

Hunting on Land Trust Preserves

Help us manage healthy ecosystems. Hunt responsibly, follow the rules, and register before you go.

Hunters as Conservation Partners

Hunters play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems on Land Trust preserves.

White-tailed deer and wild turkeys, when overabundant, damage native plants and forest regeneration. By helping manage these populations, hunters contribute directly to our conservation mission.

Most Land Trust-owned preserves are open to hunting during Wisconsin DNR seasons. A few small properties are closed due to size, location, or ecological sensitivity.

Important: Lands under conservation easement are private property. The Land Trust cannot grant hunting permission on easement lands — you must contact the landowner directly.

Register for Hunting Season

We ask all hunters to complete this form before hunting on Land Trust preserves. It helps us understand how our preserves are used and contact hunters if conditions change.

Registering helps us track preserve usage and obtain grants for additional hunting lands. Your information helps us report total hunters per season — not usage at specific preserves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave my tree stand overnight?
No. All portable stands, blinds, and trail cameras must be removed at the end of each day. Stands left overnight will be removed by staff. Make sure your stand has your name, address, and phone number on it.
Do I need permission to hunt on Land Trust preserves?
You don't need individual permission, but we ask that you register before hunting by completing our Hunter Information Form. This helps us understand preserve usage and contact hunters if needed.
Can I hunt on conservation easement lands?
No — not through us. Easement lands are private property. The Land Trust cannot grant hunting permission. You must contact the landowner directly.
Can I use bait?
No. Baiting is not permitted on any Land Trust preserve.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes, while actively hunting — dogs engaged in hunting may be off-leash. However, all dogs must be leashed April 15 – July 31 to protect ground-nesting birds.

Tips for Hikers During Hunting Season

Our preserves are open to everyone year-round, including during hunting seasons. Hunters and hikers share these spaces safely by staying aware.

If you are hiking during hunting season:

  • Wear blaze orange or bright colors — Visibility protects you
  • Stay on marked trails — Hunters expect hikers on trails, not off-trail
  • Make noise — Talk, whistle, or use bells so hunters know you're nearby
  • Keep pets leashed — Especially important during hunting season
  • Avoid white clothing — It resembles the tail of a white-tailed deer
