Guided Hike
Rediscover a Rocky Refuge at Lautenbach Woods
Join us for a one-mile guided hike through Lautenbach Woods Nature Preserve and explore the dramatic landscape of the Niagara Escarpment, where fractured dolomite bedrock tells the story of Door County’s deep geologic past. As you walk shaded trails beneath towering pines, hemlocks, and hardwoods, we will discuss how spring meltwater emerges from the base of the escarpment to form a vernal pond (temporary springtime pond) and hardwood swamp on the far western portion of the preserve that supports migrating waterfowl, salamanders, and spring peepers. Along the way, learn how seasonal changes shape the preserve, from high water marks left on trees to vibrant fall colors.
